Assignment

This graphic design assignment challenges students to apply design principles and augmented reality production techniques to develop an immersive augmented reality experience. The project involves conducting thorough research, creating a design, and producing an AR experience that includes a physical printed sticker, augmented reality content, and audio. The ultimate objective of the project is to develop design skills while engaging with emerging technologies in a graphic design context.

To start the research process, students will learn to create an AR experience using ArtiviveLinks to an external site. The final output of the project necessitates the sticker to fit on the back of a laptop or a preferred sticker placement area, leverage technology to enrich the overall experience, and achieve at least one of three objectives. The first objective is to captivate the viewer with interesting visuals, storytelling, or innovative ideas. Another approach is to educate the viewer by providing information, imparting new skills, or presenting data in an interactive and engaging way. Lastly, a third objective is to prompt a "Call to Action" by inspiring the viewer to take action, such as engaging in a social media campaign. The "Call to Action" must be persuasive and concise, compelling the viewer to act.

The project's primary goal is to investigate the possibilities of using the back of laptops and other sticker placement locations as platforms for communication and engagement, leveraging AR technology. Through engagement with emerging technologies and an iterative design process, students will gain valuable experience designing for new mediums and creating compelling interactive experiences.
Objectives

Understand the differences between VR, AR, & MRLinks to an external site.
Provide hands-on experience in AR (Augmented Reality) design and production.
Design an augmented reality (AR) experience that incorporates a physical sticker, AR content, and audio.
Challenge students to inspire, educate, or prompt a "call to action" with their AR experience.
Explore new communication and engagement locations, such as laptop backs and other places sticker can be placed.
SKETCHES
The basis of my sketches were to grab the attention of the person in line ordering at Starbucks. I wanted to aim to grab the attention of people who don't know what to order when they get coffee at a coffee shop, while adding humor into it as well.
FINAL SKETCH & AR LAYOUT
FINAL POSTER
The idea behind this poster is to capture the attention of someone who might be frantic in the coffee shop line and doesn't know what to order. I also wanted to add a little bit of humor by adding "WTF" in the middle. I played around a lot with the scaling of the graphics to make it pop more as well.
GRAPHICS
I wanted to create a drink graphic for each information card on my AR layout, so I created these! Some do not have one though, because I used my best judgment on if it needed one or not.
These graphics are the ones I used to mark each drink as what they are (Popular, Non-Coffee, Energizing, Strong, and Sweet).
ANIMATIONS
Before I realized that Artivive only let you upload three gifs, I wanted to add an animation for each drink of what the ingredients are. I did end up adding it for the "Mocha" and "Frappe" drinks, but couldn't add it for any of the other ones. This is what the basis of them looked like before uploading them into Artivive.
KEY
I created a Key so whoever scans the AR will know what each of the graphics mean, and what the color in each of the animations mean as well.
AR CONTENT
For each drink, I included an information card describing the drink, the best flavors, the caffeine content, and health benefits. Each card has a different variety of those, based off of my judgment on what I think should belong on each card.

OVERALL
Overall, this project was one of my favorites. I had never done anything with AR before, so getting to do this project in this class gave me a lot of experience that I am glad to have now. This project was enjoyable to create, and I had a lot of new ideas on the journey.

I learned how to animate in Procreate, how to utilize Artivive and Adobe Aero, and plenty of more tiny things that I hadn't known before using Procreate. One challenge I had was using Artivive, because I had animated about 10 GIF's and could only use three of them due to their limit. I wanted to add an animation for each drink on the AR content, but could not.

Changes I would have made if I had more time were to add more graphics, add more drinks/details, and use Adobe Aero to make it interactive. I originally wanted to make this interactive but I couldn't do that with Artivive.
